These books are some of the best books written on the subject. Many are older books, written in the 1960’s-1980’s but have been reprinted by companies like Dover Books and are much more affordable by them than the originals. I would still try to find the originals first, there is usually more information, and while the printing isn’t the greatest, it’s beats Dover’s print of a print they reprint the books with.

The Book in Three Sentences: This is one of the difinitive bibles of landscape painting in oils, packed with great information and helpful hints from choices of materials to use to wisdom behind brushstrokes and mark making. The demonstrations are clear and well described, although many of them are printed in black and white. His points on painting are as thoughtful as his brushwork, and his concepts on aesthetics are fantastic, stuff you don’t often read about in these “how-to” manuals.
